Child Safety

Given the current era of modernized child car seats, proliferation of children's vitamin products, and increased attention to nutrition and vaccinations, one would think that children today would be safer and healthier. Guess again. Accidental child injuries continue to claim record numbers of American children under age 14—more than disease or illness, domestic violence, and suicide combined.

Child Safety and Parent Preparation

No parent wants to even imagine the possibility of his or her child being the victim of an accident, predator, or violence; but neither should a parent be unprepared for the possibility. Through the Internet, parents can arm themselves with a number of resources, including information about advocacy groups and leading experts on child safety.

Child Safety Concerns

The most pressing and immediate concern of child safety advocates is the prevention of accidental injury, the leading killer of American children. Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, promotes programs and provides resources for preventing accidental injuries. Safe Kids does not recommend specific devices, but rather creates programs and promotes awareness for maintaining safe households. Its Web site, SafeKids.org, provides a wealth of tips to prevent or handle common accidents such as choking, burns, and poisoning.

Child Safety Compromised by Virtual Media?

Parents today face immense challenges for protecting their kids in the age of the Internet and video games. While games and the Web have terrific teaching potential, they can also place children within easy reach of adult material and violent content. However, parents can take steps to minimize the impact of virtual media on their children by using tools such as “safe surfing” software that is designed to monitor the content to which their children are exposed.

Child Safety Resources

Web sites like MissingKids.com exhibit how the Internet can offer unique ways to deal with the age-old problem of looking after one's children. On MissingKids.com, pictures of missing children and contact information is used to help locate children. Similarly, sites like SafeKids.org can provide parents with an online medical reference for immediate advice when emergencies arise. Although the child safety risks posed by the Internet are alarming and widely-recognized, the Internet also offers some of the most powerful parent tools available today.
