Car Dealers

As exciting as buying a new car can be, it is hard to overcome a sense of apprehension when walking into a car dealership. Most feel defeated and stressed before they even begin the shopping process. But with a little preliminary research, a trip to the car dealer does not have to be an unpleasant experience.

The Car Dealer's Tarnished Reputaion

Many factors have contributed to the car dealer's bad reputation, including lease scams, overpricing, and overly-aggressive behavior toward prospective buyers. This is unfortunate since most car dealers do have the consumer's best interest in mind and try to accommodate all types of buyers.

Who Is the Car Dealer?

The car dealer is the middleman between the auto manufacturer and the consumer. Nine out of ten dealers sell new cars with only one in ten specializing in used vehicles. The economy and consumer spending habits directly impact the auto industry. When a downturn hits, car dealers are more likely to offer consumer incentives such as low- or no-interest loans, rebates, and attractive lease options.

As the industry has grown, the role of the car dealer has increased. Dealers not only sell new cars, but also offer financing, leases, service repairs, and part and accessory sales. Used cars are also big business for dealers, especially the certified pre-owned luxury vehicle market.

Visiting a Car Dealer

Consumers are best advised to be informed before visiting a car dealer. Web sites dealing in new and used car reviews, rating systems, and public forums are a great place to start. These sites are also good places to research the different options and add-ons available.

Once the selection has been narrowed down, and you just want to browse, follow these tips to get the most from your visit:
  • Budget ample time to browse, compare models, and speak with a salesperson
  • Shop during less busy times such as a Tuesday or Wednesday
  • Come prepared with a list of desired features
  • If financing, bring along any documentation or information that might be needed and know what type of financing you want or can afford
  • Take a test drive
  • Inquire about any special savings deals such as rebates before the negotiation process
  • Obtain the true value of the vehicle before any added features are figured into the equation
  • Consider the importance of the vehicle's warranty in relation to the overall value of the vehicle.

Car Dealers and the Law

As frustrating as shopping for a car can be, there are advantages to using a car dealer. Many laws are in place that the dealer must follow, such as the Federal Trade Commission's Used Car Rule, the state's “implied warranties” and lemon laws. Ask for referrals from friends and contact the Better Business Bureau for any consumer complaints against a car dealer that you're considering doing business with.

The Car Dealer and You

Remember that there are thousands of car dealers to choose from, and don't settle. A car purchase is an important decision, so choose wisely and deal with a car dealer that gives you the peace of mind in knowing that you are making the best decision for you.
