Automobile Accidents

Automobile accidents can occur at any time, for a number of reasons. They can be extremely damaging events, often involving multiple cars, people, structures, bikes, animals, trees, and signs. Not only do they take a high financial and emotional toll, but they also affect many lives in different ways.

Types of Automobile Accidents

Categories of accidents, or collisions, include: head-on collisions; read-end collisions; side collisions; rollovers; single-vehicle collisions; multi-vehicle collisions; level crossing accidents, and suicide.

Certain times of the year are more accident-prone than others. Memorial Day Weekend, for instance, is a weekend when thousands of people travel. Because of the frightening number of accidents that occur annually during this weekend, the Consumer Protection Association of America designated the week prior to Memorial Day as “National Driver Education Week.” The Association created a list of suggestions that drivers should be aware of in the event of an accident.

Handling an Collision

If you are ever involved in an accident, the following steps are recommended:
  • Remain calm
  • Be safe -- move cars out of the traffic's way or get out of the car if there's a potential fire
  • Exchange necessary information with other people involved in the accident
  • Take pictures and document the accident
  • File the accident report
  • Understand what your car insurance covers.

  • When an accident occurs, the other people on the road typically rubberneck, or rather, turn to look at the accident as they drive by the scene. This causes many more traffic, and is dangerous because the drivers are not necessarily paying attention to their own driving. Often times, accidents happen as a result of rubbernecking, causing additional car accidents in the same area.

    Driving Safely

It is important to drive safely and to have a safe vehicle. Top safety considerations of a car are its safety equipment, the car's weight, and how likely it will rollover. Are smaller or larger cars safer? That's the ongoing debate. Due to the sheer size of the car, larger cars seem to be safer. However, smaller cars are less likely to rollover. And there is becoming a solid assortment of safe small car options. However, larger vehicles (e.g. SUVs) do have higher safety statistics than those of smaller cars.

    Auto Insurance Coverage

Because an accident can occur at any moment, the business of car insurance is crucial. Nowadays, car insurance is offered by insurance companies, travel companies, and even Internet companies. Car insurance protects people from the potentially serious financial losses resulting from automobile accidents. Depending on the plan chosen -- there are so many -- car insurance will pay the financial costs of the accident.

There a few major components of car insurance. These include:
    • Property damage liability
    • Rental car reimbursement
    • Collision
    • Comprehensive physical damage
    • Bodily injury liability
    • Medical payments
    • Uninsured or underinsured motorists

It is best to get a full grasp of these topics before making a decision on car insurance coverage. It is also important to understand the entire policy, just in case you are involved in an accident.

On an interesting side note, the word “accident” as used in “automobile accident” has come under criticism of late. The term does not aptly describe what occurred. In reality, most automobile accidents are avoidable. For this reason, some authorities have chosen not to use the traditional term, "automobile accident," but rather they replace it with car crash, collision, or incident. Even a car wreck is considered more accurate than a car accident.
