Art Information

The term "art" can mean many things. Originating from the Latin, “ars,” which means skill or craft, modern-day usage of the term refers to “the arts,” which includes painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, and music. More narrowly defined, art connotes painting and sculpture. Art information involves topics related to the visual arts, including photography and graphic arts, and other more recent multi-media art forms (i.e., computer animation and videography).

Identifying Art

When is something considered art? A work is considered art when it is regarded as having artistic value, or when it evokes emotions through an examination of the human condition and philosophical or spiritual questions. Art goes hand-in-hand with creativity. When thinking of art, one thinks of the great master painters and art museums. One also thinks of art history courses, wherein the great masters are studied in detail, and in the context of their influence on, and reflection of the times in which they lived and worked.

The Overlapping of Art

Other aspects of art include the symbols used, and the cultural aspects of art (i.e., African, Islamic, Asian, and Latin American Art). These topics, sometimes, overlap with anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Related topics include aesthetics – the philosophy of beauty – and art criticism.

Seeking Art Information

When deciding what kind of art information one is seeking, one must narrow his or her search according to the specific area of interest. Searching the Internet is fruitful, as many sites break down the topic into many of the areas of interest, such as by artist, museum, historical period, or type of work (the school of painting, for example); whether one is searching for academic pursuit; if the one searching wants to buy, sell, or create artworks.

There are Web sites designed for the artist, students, teachers, collectors, and art dealers. On such sites, one can find art terminology defined to help you narrow your search (such as art history, antique art, art galleries, etc.) Some sites allow the researcher to conduct a search by the artist's name, the title of a particular work, or where the work is located (the museum or gallery). One can view artworks online and get information about the paintings, including some history and where they are located.

Buying and Selling Art Online

There is art for sale online, including paintings, posters, and books about art. There are also online art newsletters, worldwide museum websites, and even art auctions online, including information about the pricing of art works and the means to advertise one's works is targeted for those working as artists.

Discussing Art with Other Aficionados

If you are an art aficionado, you can even talk about art online. If you are an artist, you can discuss practical issues related to your professional life online with other artists. Online art newsletters provide upto date in-depth articles covering the global art community, and follow stories on a wide variety of topics that may be of interest to anyone connected with, or passionate about art in general.
