Selecting an Adoption Agency
Many adoption services are available through public and private agencies on the state, national, and even international levels. When selecting an adoption agency, the National Adoption Information Clearinghouse fact sheet, “Adoptions at a Glance,” provides a comprehensive discussion of the important issues involved in choosing the right agency. If you are considering international adoption, another excellent source is the U.S. State Department Web site. There is information on adoption categorized by country, and each entry explains how to start the process, as well as a wide variety of related topics.
Information provided by NAIC includes public and private adoption agencies, support groups, and reunion registries. Information is provided for those wanting to adopt, as well as for those wanting to provide foster care. In addition, there is information about intermediary services and photo listings for children waiting to be adopted-through AdoptUsKids, in addition to referrals for adoption attorneys.
Another excellent resource for adoption is the American Pregnancy Association, which provides education for all aspects of pregnancy, including adoption, including the pros and cons of the different types of adoption: “open,” “semi-open,” and “closed.” Their assistance is provided for both adoptive parents and birthparents. They also offer advice on financial resources and assistance with going through all the necessary steps including: choosing the type of adoption, selecting the proper adoption agency, going through the “home study” process, waiting for placement, and finalizing the adoption – including the filing of legal documents.
Deciding to Adopt
Adopting a child is a very big decision, and there are many steps to take in the process. With the abundance of resources available, individuals can find all the help that they need, including the perfect child from anywhere in the world.
